Colored Pencil Paintings Professional colored pencils are a dry painting medium allowing for rich colors and fine detail. As you can see, colored pencils are more than a sketching tool. There can be as many as 20 layers of pigment in a painting as the colors are built up to their maximum brilliance. These waxy pigments are not fully opaque, allowing for underlying colors to show through, giving a transparent glow to the painting. Great are the works of
the Lord; They are pondered by all who delight in them.
